In the context of the transformation of our energy systems the role of future combustion technologies is briefly
discussed. To compensate for load variations in highly fluctuating power from wind and solar, improved
combustion processes will contribute substantially to the mix of complementary energy conversion
technologies. A major task in combustion science and engineering is the development of load and fuel flexible,
highly efficient and clean gas turbines and reciprocating engines. This development is increasingly based on a
detailed understanding of the underlying mutually coupled physical and chemical processes. In this talk it will
be shown how advanced laser diagnostics in combustion systems contributes to a much improved
understanding of the interaction between chemical reactions and turbulent flows that are confined by
combustor walls.
