FAU is one of the top 200 universities worldwide in four subjects. This becomes evident from the current QS World University Ranking by Subject, which the service provider for educational information, QS Quacquarelli Symonds, has published. Materials science performed particularly well with a rank in the top 100. Other FAU subjects in the top 200 are chemistry, chemical engineering and electrical engineering.

In the fields of medicine, engineering and natural sciences, FAU occupies ranks among the top 250 universities worldwide with nine subjects. In the field of citation and publication-based indicators, i.e. how often researchers are cited by the FAU or how much they publish themselves, FAU occupies several top 100 places in the subjects of materials science, chemistry and mathematics. The international success is also evident in the national ranking. FAU is one of the top addresses in Germany in four subjects: materials science (5th place), chemical engineering and electrical engineering (both 8th place) and mechanical engineering (9th place).

The QS World University Ranking has examined 1,368 universities worldwide. QS evaluates categories such as academic reputation, number of publications cited and employer reputation, in which companies are asked about their assessment of the universities.
