Welcome MAP newcomers 2021
The MAP team warmly welcomes 32 new MAP students from the 2020 starting class! We are proud that you have overcome many obstacles and are finally part of the MAP family by now! We wish you all a great time in the MAP programme and hope that you will soon ajust to the new conditions and regulations within German society and FAU resulting of the corona pandemic.
In order to become a MAP student, applicants always have to overcome certain barriers. The interview process is a great challenge for many, others deal with organizational problems in their home countries. In 2020, the most difficult part was to overcome obstacles caused by the Corona pandemic: universities were closed in some countries and our applicants could not be granted official translations of certificates. The national and international transport systems of letters were limited by national regulations. In various parts of the world, German embassies were closed and no more visa applications were recieved. In addition, the regulations for entry from other countries and quarantine have constantly changed in Germany.
Despite all these and other troubles, 32 students officially started with their MAP studies. Again the mixture of countries, academic background and gender is very unique! We welcome our first ever MAP students from Spain and Oman and celebrate again with all our students diversity in many areas!
22 of our new MAP students have already savely arrived in Erlangen by now! All others will try to move to Germany at a later point. In general, MAP offers online lectures and lab courses, online excursions and soft skills seminars. Therefore, MAP students can also study from abroad, i.e. from their home countries, and get best possible support by older peers, lecturers and the MAP Office staff.
Like many of the FAU staff, the MAP Office team completely works from home. Lecturers are motivated to engage with new interesting digital teaching tools. Zoom meetings and introductions in a digital format are planned. Unfortunately, this year, we cannot celebrate our first MAP family meeting in the winter semester – the MAP pizza party. However, our first and third semester MAP students are invited to introduce themselves during the “digital MAP pizzaparty”. Pizza will need to be organized by each participant him- or herself.
We know the winter semester 2020 is characterized by the need of (inner) flexibility. We wish all MAP students to find a personal way to overcome the next barriers, to establish friendships even if only possible by electronic means and to look forward to the scientific work! Good luck to all of you!
